What are some of the things that come to your mind when you think of sports cars? Is it their flashy colours and intricate aerodynamic designs? The way they zoom past you with or without a roaring engine to get your attention? Or perhaps it’s that premium feel of driving one, savouring the way it handles? Or perhaps it is everything to do with what makes a sports car what it is. Here we have a list of five of some of the world’s best sports cars, appraised by sports car enthusiast sites such as Auto Express, Auto Car UK, and EVO UK.

Porsche 911 Carrera

The Porsche 911 is deemed to be a universal benchmark of sports cars, boasting sophisticated engineering with its handful of variations such as the Carrera S and 4S models which are a continuation from the previous GTS model from the previous generation. The 992-generation of the 911 Carrera offers various versions such as the Coupe, Cabriolet, and Targa to choose from. The Turbo S variant with 641bhp is deemed to be a top pick with 0-62mph (0-99.78km/h) sprint under just 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 205mph (about 330km/h).

Porsche 718

The Porsche 718 offers two variations - the Boxster convertible, and the regular Cayman. In terms of experience, the Porsche 718 Boxster’s folding roof makes the car a little less practical but no less of an entertaining sports car if you’re the type to feel the wind in your hair while driving this six-cylinder engine baby. This gives a supercar-in-miniature experience you would not want to miss.

Ford Mustang

The latest Ford Mustang is a muscle car that is value for money, as it has the same 444bhp output as the Porsche 911 Carrera S, while only costing £50,000 (RM274,223.53) less (c. Jan 2022). The Mustang also comes equipped with a 5.0-litre V8 and a 0-62mph (0-99.78km/h) time of 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 155mph (249.45km/h). It may not be as well-built, polished and refined as some of its rivals that are more costly, but don’t let that fool you as this does little harm to the Mustang’s personality. If you’re the type of enthusiast to enjoy loud roaring engines, you won’t get tired of the noise of the Mustang’s quad tailpipes. The Mustang had also been through a revision of its chassis, having added adaptive dampers for better control in its steering, with a preference for the six-speed manual box in contrast to the draggy 10-speed auto.

Nissan GT-R

Previous versions of the Nissan GT-R were criticised for an overall lack of refinement. However, the latest GT-R puts focus towards comfort. As expected, the car boasts a hand-built 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 with 562bhp, with a vast array of driver-assist systems, all while smoothened low-speed shifts, improved sound-deadening, and a more luxurious cabin. The GT-R becomes more usable for the day-to-day, while still being able to hit 0-62mph (0-99.78km/h) in 2.8 seconds.

Audi TT

The Audi TT offers several available variations in the market to choose from, including a roadster and the more hardcore TT RS. Regardless, the basic principles remain the same throughout all Audi TTs, while being engaging to drive and with an attractive appearance. Depending on your choice of specs, a standard TT is fitted with a TFSI engine of 2.0 litres that produces either 194 or 242bhp. Nevertheless, the engine is guaranteed to give a smooth and punchy feel regardless of the power output. The interior also boasts a stylistic choice of dynamic design with a vast array of technologies, including the Virtual Cockpit System. The car does come with two rear seats but with very limited legroom that it’s impractical for adult passengers, and would rather be used as added storage space.
