As car owners and regular road users, the responsibility is on us to ensure our car is not a safety hazard to others and ourselves when driving. But how certain do we know about our car and its safety features? How sure that we know that our car is safe and that it’s safe to drive? Let’s take a look at some of the common safety features that most modern cars have.

Seatbelts are an essential part of a car’s safety features. They are known to be a Primary Restraint System (PRS), which means the role they play is vital to passenger and driver safety. Anchored to a retractor mechanism, seatbelts are locked in place and stops you from flying forward when a car stops suddenly. Did you know that there are different types of seatbelts? The three-point belt is the most common type of seatbelt which are use on today’s cars.

Airbags have always been a crucial safety feature in a car. Newer cars are fitted with several airbags to protect the driver and passengers in the event of an accident. Airbags have seen developments in the protection they offer, resulting in hundreds of lives saved per year. Airbags work by inflating within a millisecond upon the car’s collision detected by sensors. Curtain airbags especially excel at preventing head injuries by holding people in place. Modern airbag systems are also able to adjust the power and speed of the inflation according to the weight of the person detected on the car seats. This is to ensure that people, especially children, won’t be injured.

Modern cars are also fitted with more advanced technologies that assist in preventing car accidents altogether. These advanced technologies are for pedestrian detection and collision warning. These work by using a combination of laser, camera, and radar technology to detect objects around the vehicle. When an object is detected close to the vehicle, the driver will be alerted by a beeping sound and in some cars, even have a warning sign on a heads-up display.

Of course, what most drivers would need when they are in an accident-prone emergency situation is to PUMP THE BRAKES before colliding with an object or another vehicle. When the brake pedal is pressed, the pressure pushes the hydraulic fluid from the brake master cylinder through the brake lines, and that hydraulic pressure is applied through the brake pads on the caliper to the brake disc or rotor that is attached to the wheels, causing them to slow down and stop. Modern car brakes also work with systems such as ABS (anti-lock brake system) which detects and adjusts the braking force so that the wheels don’t stop suddenly, to prevent the car from skidding and turning over.

Cars are getting safer and safer with each new generation, each car with advanced and improved features. Drivers ought to know their car’s safety features to ensure the safest and most comfortable driving experience for themselves, and for those around them.
